In 1993, Mark and Chris Currie moved their young family to Moscow, Russia when they were called by God to serve in the spiritual awakening that coincided with the fall of the former Soviet Union. Sent by their home church, Church of the Redeemer in suburban Washington D.C. and supported financially by family and friends, they served in a Bible school and visited churches in different Russian cities, learning the language and getting to know the people.

In 1995, they planted New Hope Church in Moscow with three Bible school graduates, Sergei and Julia Charaev and Roman Gulik.   Today, almost twenty years later, Mark and Sergei lead the church as part of Word of Life, an international church movement based in Uppsala, Sweden.    Word of Life, Moscow is composed of a large central church and several regional churches.   New Hope is the regional church in the Lefortovo district of Moscow.  Chris earned a doctorate in Counseling Education from Old Dominion University in Virginia and is a practicing counselor in Moscow.  She and Mark teach at the Russian Orthodox University of St. John the Divine in the International Higher School of Social Work.   They also teach at the Institute of Social Work and Counseling in Moscow and at other Word of Life churches.  In October 2013, Mark spent a week in Hanoi, Vietnam giving a seminar on Christian counseling and soul care at a Word of Life school for pastors.  Mark is the Executive Director of New Hope International (NHI) and he and Christine are two of the original Board members.

When in the USA, Mark and Chris reside in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  Their four children grew up in Moscow, where the family was a part of the Hinkson Christian Academy community, but today they live and work in the USA.  Madeleine is a university administrator in Boston.  Grace and her husband Tyler Barnes are in Augusta, Georgia where Grace teaches and Tyler served in the US Navy.  David and his wife are in the Philadelphia area where he is a doctor and she is a fashion designer.  Danny lives in New Orleans where he is in seminary and serves as a youth pastor.
