About

Balu & Margaret

Balu and Margaret Savarikannu are missionary teachers. Balu has a PhD in Biblical Studies, and Margaret is in the middle of her doctoral studies in Theology. God called Balu and Margaret to teach the Bible and theology to disciple young people the future church planters. Balu teaches Old Testament, and Margaret teaches Contextual Theology. Balu is the principal of a seminary called Church on the Rock (COTR) Theological Seminary in Visakhapatnam, a coastal region in South India. Apart from their teaching, they also help poor children receive free education in remote villages in Tamilnadu and West Bengal, the regions they come from. Balu and Margaret are blessed with two boys, Sashwath and Samarth.

Testimony

Balu and Margaret grew up in non-Christian families in different parts of India. Balu is Tamil, and Margaret is Bengali. They received their call for full-time Christian ministry in their teens. Balu was a cross-cultural missionary in North Bihar, and Margaret worked among children in Kolkata (aka Calcutta). They met at SAIACS (South Asia Institute of Advanced Christian Studies) in Bangalore. Balu received the vision from the Lord to “build the builders” (‘Come…let us build’, Neh. 2:17) to train younger generations for mission work and church planting in India.

NHI Connection

It was God’s providential care and guidance that Balu met Don and Sharon Lee in 2007, who were then NHI missionaries in Bangalore. Balu joined the Lees in their outreach ministries among young people working in call centers. Later, Balu met Mark Currie, the founder of NHI and Board member Ernst Lutz in Bangalore and shared his vision. Since then, Balu and Margaret have been NHI missionaries.

Ministry Activities and Goals

Balu and Margaret enjoy teaching in Bible seminaries. They invest their time and energy in the lives of young people who come from various parts of India, and they teach and mentor them for future ministry. As the principal of a seminary, Balu does a lot of administrative work. His goal is to help the faculty team and students grow “from good to great” for the mission of God. He has initiated the “Principal Mission Fund” to support students who struggle to pay their fees and support faculty members during their illness. Balu also teaches in many Asian countries. He teaches Old Testament courses for seminaries in Malaysia, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka. Margaret is the dean of women in the seminary where she teaches, and she takes good care of the young women as they prepare for future ministry. Both Balu and Margaret are preachers of the Word. They visit their student churches in remote Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, and West Bengal and preach the Bible.

Balu and Margaret believe that education is the key to liberating people from the clutches of caste, religious, and social discrimination. Proper theological education will lead to more significant faith communities. Theologian education aids nation-building.
